METAMORPHO TRADING CARDS (PART 1)

Although DC Comics published several sets of stickers, tattoos  and trading cards in the past, the "DC Cosmic Cards Inaugural Edition" from 1992 is considered the landmark for all trading card sets based on the DC Universe. Marvel Comics started this fever of trading cards there by 1990 with their first 162 card set so DC wanted a piece of the cake too.

Impel Marketing was the company who acquired the rights to create the set, the company later would become Skybox International. This company failed to acquire the rights of Batman and every character associated to him this was a very weak point of the set.

Curiously the set has no Batman at all or any bat villain. For that time Warner Bros. was doing Batman movies so they retained the rights for any merchandise associated to the character.

The set was balanced and brought a good number of not so popular characters so the chances for Metamorpho to be taken into account were high considering the total of cards were 180 (a high number considering today's standards for DC trading card sets) plus 10 chasing cards. Moreover for the time, Metamorpho was a prominent member of the Justice League Europe so his spot was more than deserved.

The number card assigned to Metamorpho was 62 and although Bart Sears and Randy Elliot are great artists, I am really disappointed because the rendition of the character does not make him look that heroic as some others from the set. But still the Rexy boy looks awesome using his powers and it is good to see him being part of this legendary trading card set.

As an extra I would like to make an honorable mention of card C7 from the 1992 "Doomsday, The Death of Superman" trading card set which is part of a puzzle that uses the art from the poster included in the legendary Superman #75 featuring the death of the Man of Steel.

Metamorpho attended to the funeral so he appears on the poster alongside several other characters from the DC universe. Good Rex could not miss the funeral, considering that even Darkseid was there. Wait, Darkseid?!
